Information about Metrogyl 400 Tablet

Description:

Metrogyl is used to treat bacterial infections in different areas of the body. The extended-release tablets are used to treat women with vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis). Metrogyl belongs to the class of medicines known as antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, Metrogyl will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections. Metrogyl is available only with your doctor's prescription. Once a medicine has been approved for marketing for a certain use, experience may show that it is also useful for other medical problems. Although these uses are not included in product labeling, Metrogyl is used in certain patients with the following medical conditions: Clostridium difficile diarrhea or colitis (antibiotic-associated colitis). Crohn's disease (inflammatory bowel disease). Gastritis or stomach ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori. Giardiasis (parasite infection in the intestines).

Uses / Indications:

Metrogyl 400 Tablet is used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (called symptomatic trichomoniasis). It is a prescription medicine. This medicine works by interacting with DNA that interferes with the DNA synthesis that leads to the end of bacteria. Metrogyl 400 is also used to treat a genitourinary infection (called asymptomatic trichomoniasis). It is also used to treat asymptomatic sexual partners. Metrogyl 400 is also used to treat a parasitic infection of the colon (amebiasis) and a parasitic infection of the small intestine (giardiasis). Metrogyl 400 Tablet is also used to treat certain anaerobic bacterial infections that include intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, female reproductive organ (gynecologic) infections, blood poisoning (bacterial septicemia), lower respiratory tract infection, serious heart infection (endocarditis), central nervous system infections, and bone and joint infections. Metrogyl 400 is also used to prevent the infections that may occur before, during or after the operation of the intestine (elective colorectal surgery). This medicine helps by decreasing the incidence of infection received after a surgical procedure in patients experiencing elective disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon (colorectal surgery). Metrogyl 400 Tablet is also used to treat acute dental infections e.g. painful infection of the gums (acute ulcerative gingivitis or acute pericoronitis) and pus inside the teeth (acute apical infections). Metrogyl 400 is also used to treat anaerobically-infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.

Interactions / Warnings:

Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. So, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. You should not breastfeed while taking Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's as it passes into the breastmilk, and can affect the baby. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's as it may cause dizziness, drowsiness and make you less alert. Do not take Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's if you are allergic to Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's or other antibiotics, blood thinners (coumarins, warfarin), anti-epileptic drugs (phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone), anti-cancer drugs (busulfan, fluorouracil, mycophenolate). You should immediately report to the doctor in case you have symptoms of dehydration like dehydration dry mouth, excessive thirst, wrinkled skin, little or no urination, dizziness and lightheadedness. In some cases, prolonged intake of Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's has been associated with leukopenia (low count of white blood cells). Use of Metrogyl 400 Tablet 15's is contraindicated in the patient suffering from central nervous system (CNS) diseases like seizures (fits). Intake of probiotics, prebiotics and plenty of fluids is recommended if you are suffering from dysentery and diarrhoea.

Side Effects:

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: More common Itching in the vagina pain during sexual intercourse thick, white vaginal discharge with no odor or with a mild odor Less common Abdominal or stomach cramping or pain burning on urination or need to urinate more often burning or irritation of penis of sexual partner itching, stinging, or redness of the genital area Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them: Less common Diarrhea dizziness or lightheadedness dryness of the mouth feeling of a furry tongue headache loss of appetite metallic taste or other change in taste sensation Nausea vomiting Metrogyl may cause your urine to become dark. This is harmless and will go away when you stop using Metrogyl. After you stop using Metrogyl, it may still produce some side effects that need attention. During this period of time, check with your doctor immediately if you notice the following side effects: Any vaginal or genital irritation or itching pain during sexual intercourse thick, white vaginal discharge not present before treatment, with no odor or with a mild odor Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.

Medicine interaction:

When two or more medicines are taken together, it can change how the medicines work and increase the risk of side-effects. In medical terms, this is called as a Drug Interaction. Metrogyl 400 Tablet interacts with warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, which are used to prevent blood clots. The patients who use Metrogyl 400 in combination with anticoagulants such as warfarin may experience an increased anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, which may further prolong the blood clotting time. In such patients, the time that blood takes to clot (prothrombin time and international normalized ratio) should be carefully monitored. There may be an interaction of Metrogyl 400 with alcoholic beverages, which is an alcoholic drink containing ethanol, known as alcohol. The patients undergoing treatment with Metrogyl 400 may experience cramps in stomach, Nausea, vomiting, headache, and flushing if they consume alcohol or substances containing propylene glycol during or after treatment. Patients who are on treatment with Metrogyl 400 should stop consumption of alcohol or products that contain propylene glycol during and after three days of therapy with Metrogyl 400. Metrogyl 400 Tablet may interact with disulfiram, which is used for the treatment of alcoholism. The patients who use Metrogyl 400 in combination with disulfiram may develop mental problems (psychotic reactions). The patients who have taken disulfiram within the last two weeks should not take Metrogyl 400. Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with Busulfan, which is used in the treatment of certain types of cancers. The patients who use Metrogyl 400 in combination with busulfan may experience an increase in the levels of busulfan in the blood, which may result in an increased risk of harmful effects of busulfan due to its accumulation. Patients who are on treatment with Metrogyl 400 should not be given busulfan if the benefit by busulfan is less than the risk. If there is no other treatment available, the levels of busulfan in the blood should be monitored routinely and its dose should be adjusted properly.
